PhD position in Mathematics of Quantum Information

Announced on 18 February 2026

The quantum information theory group led by Prof. Mario Berta is offering a PhD position (E13 3/4) to conduct research on the mathematical aspects of quantum information theory. The successful candidate will be co-supervised by Prof. Mario Berta and Dr. Robert Salzmann.

The position is intended for a student who enjoys working mathematically and is motivated to prove rigorous results in quantum information theory throughout the PhD. We seek candidates that have a background in either mathematical physics (in particular mathematical quantum mechanics), theoretical computer science, or applied mathematics, as well as a strong academic record, commitment, and motivation. During the PhD, the student will tackle operationally relevant questions concerning finite-dimensional (discrete-variable) and infinite-dimensional (continuous-variable) quantum systems. The research will draw on a broad range of mathematical techniques, including matrix analysis, probability theory, functional analysis, operator theory, and operator algebras; familiarity with some of these areas is an advantage.
More information about the group’s research activities can be found at marioberta.info. The group is funded by the European Research Council and the Cluster of Excellence ML4Q. Successful applicants are expected to actively engage in local and international collaborations and related scientific activities.

Applications should include a cover letter, CV, publication list (if applicable), a brief research statement, a sample of academic writing (e.g. a Master’s thesis or comparable work, preferably demonstrating strong mathematical writing skills), transcripts of records for both Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees. In a second stage of the selection process, shortlisted candidates will be asked to arrange for two letters of recommendation. Applications and enquiries shall be sent to robert.salzmann@rwth-aachen.de. The position is available immediately and can start as soon as possible. The call will remain open until the position is filled, and applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis.
